There are tons of tools in Minecraft, and they all have their uses. But guess what? The anvil is like the boss of them all. It’s easy to make and super helpful.
So, what’s an anvil? It’s a tool that lets you repair and combine weapons and armor. It’s a game-changer, trust me!
What Are Anvils?
In the real world, an anvil is a tool that has long been used to shape metal and craft equipment. In Minecraft, it serves a similar role, but it can do so much more than that. The dark gray little blocky anvil packs quite the punch.
In Minecraft, anvils can be used to –
- Repair items
- Rename them
- Modify enchantments.
Because of these functions, they are quite helpful utility blocks. While they sometimes spawn naturally in woodland mansions, they can also be crafted easily. To make one yourself, here’s what you’ll need.

What Items Do I Need to Make an Anvil?
Step 1 – Materials needed to build an anvil
- 31 iron ingots
- 3 iron blocks
- A crafting table
Crafting an anvil requires a LOT of iron. To be exact, you will need 31 iron ingots. 27 of these will be used to make iron blocks. You will need 3 iron blocks as well. Of course, you won’t be able to craft it without a crafting table itself.
Since the recipe requires a lot of iron, it is best to start mining deep. Start by making a stone pickaxe and mine away deep into the mountains to get an adequate amount of iron. Once you have enough, you’ll need a furnace to smelt the raw iron ore into ingots.
Step 2 – Crafting Recipe for an Anvil
Once you have the raw materials, start working out the recipe. Fill all nine holes with iron ingots to create iron blocks. Once you have it, you can begin working on the anvil.
Place three blocks of iron in the top row of the crafting table. Place an iron ingot in the middle hole of the second row. Then, finally, fill the bottom row with iron ingots to make the anvil. There you go. Now you have your very own anvil to use as you see fit.
Before you wonder what to do with it, let us help you more. Let’s discuss its applications and uses.
Step 3 – Using Anvils
We already touched on what anvils can be used for. Let’s elaborate on that. To repair an item, you can add an ingot of any material to a damaged weapon or tool on the anvil to repair it.
There’s another way of repairing items, which involves combining two damaged items. Renaming any items is even easier since you only have to place them on the anvil.
You can also combine enchanted books with tools to enchant them as well. The best thing about anvils is that repairing doesn’t eliminate their enchantment. As such, it is often a better choice than using a grindstone.
Lastly, in the bedrock edition, you can use the anvil to edit or expand on the map.
Start Hammering Away!
So, there you have it. Anvils are one of the most useful items you can craft in the game. They’re not just useful for repairing, but because of the other utilities they offer.
Even if you’re not an avid crafter, having an anvil in your home base is a good idea. You never know when you will need to repair that enchanted sword. So, hammer away and have a good time.
